The core VM already knows about VM_FAULT_SIGBUS, but cannot return a "you should SIGSEGV" error, because the SIGSEGV case was generally handled by the caller - usually the architecture fault handler. That results in lots of duplication - all the architecture fault handlers end up doing very similar "look up vma, check permissions, do retries etc" - but it generally works. However, there are cases where the VM actually wants to SIGSEGV, and applications _expect_ SIGSEGV. In particular, when accessing the stack guard page, libsigsegv expects a SIGSEGV. And it usually got one, because the stack growth is handled by that duplicated architecture fault handler. However, when the generic VM layer started propagating the error return from the stack expansion in commit fee7e49d4514 ("mm: propagate error from stack expansion even for guard page"), that now exposed the existing VM_FAULT_SIGBUS result to user space. And user space really expected SIGSEGV, not SIGBUS. To fix that case, we need to add a VM_FAULT_SIGSEGV, and teach all those duplicate architecture fault handlers about it. They all already have the code to handle SIGSEGV, so it's about just tying that new return value to the existing code, but it's all a bit annoying. This is the mindless minimal patch to do this. A more extensive patch would be to try to gather up the mostly shared fault handling logic into one generic helper routine, and long-term we really should do that cleanup. Just from this patch, you can generally see that most architectures just copied (directly or indirectly) the old x86 way of doing things, but in the meantime that original x86 model has been improved to hold the VM semaphore for shorter times etc and to handle VM_FAULT_RETRY and other "newer" things, so it would be a good idea to bring all those improvements to the generic case and teach other architectures about them too. Which in turn issues from the 21-bit displacement in 'br{cond4}' mnemonic which is one of the two ways to do jumps (rjmp has just 10-bit displacement and therefore a way smaller range). This fact was stated before in 8d29b7b9f81d6b83d869ff054e6c189d6da73f1f. One solution to solve this is to add a local storage for the symbol address and just load the $pc with that value. Consequently, DMA is always enabled (if supported), but the DMA-channel is not released on module unload unless the DMA-config option is selected. Remove the no longer used CONFIG_MMC_ATMELMCI_DMA option completely. But on some architectures, the cmpxchg() implementation is not NMI-safe, on these architectures the lockless code may need a spin_trylock_irqsave() based implementation. This patch adds a Kconfig option: ARCH_HAVE_NMI_SAFE_CMPXCHG, so that NMI-safe lockless code can depend on it or provide different implementation according to it. On many architectures, cmpxchg is only NMI-safe for several specific operand sizes. So, ARCH_HAVE_NMI_SAFE_CMPXCHG define in this patch only guarantees cmpxchg is NMI-safe for sizeof(unsigned long). This patches moves the code that includes asm-generic/atomic*.h to linux/atomic.h. Archs that need <asm-generic/atomic64.h> need to select CONFIG_GENERIC_ATOMIC64 from now on (some of them used to include it unconditionally). Compile tested on i386 and x86_64 with allnoconfig. This is not done using the generic-y mechanism as none of these arch's have started using that mechanism yet. This is a trivial change to make later when the arch begins using generic-y. While doing this I have noticed that we have some architectures that are very slow to get new system calls. cris seems to be the slowest where the last system calls wired up were preadv and pwritev. avr32 is weird in that recvmmsg was wired up but never declared in unistd.h. frv is behind with perf_event_open being the last syscall wired up. On h8300 the last system call wired up was epoll_wait. On m32r the last system call wired up was fallocate. mn10300 has recvmmsg as the last system call wired up. Also, the use of is_global_init() is not correct in the multhreaded case, as Oleg Nesterov explains, "is_global_init() is not right in theory, /sbin/init can be multithreaded. And, this doesn't cover the sub-namespace inits... I'd suggest to check SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE, but looking closer I think you can simply remove this code." It seems this code was copied from arch/powerpc in March 2007 in commit 623b0355d5b1 "[AVR32] Clean up exception handling code" but the code was deleted from arch/powerpc in November 2009 in commit a0592d42fe3e "powerpc: kill the obsolete code under is_global_init()" So catch up with powerpc and delete the bogus code.
