* NLM: Fix a circular lock dependency in lockdTrond Myklebust2007-09-261-11/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The problem is that the garbage collector for the 'host' structures nlm_gc_hosts(), holds nlm_host_mutex while calling down to nlmsvc_mark_resources, which, eventually takes the file->f_mutex. We cannot therefore call nlmsvc_lookup_host() from within nlmsvc_create_block, since the caller will already hold file->f_mutex, so the attempt to grab nlm_host_mutex may deadlock. Fix the problem by calling nlmsvc_lookup_host() outside the file->f_mutex. Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <Trond.Myklebust@netapp.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

* knfsd: lockd: nfsd4: use same grace period for lockd and nfsd4Marc Eshel2007-07-171-7/+20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Both lockd and (in the nfsv4 case) nfsd enforce a "grace period" after reboot, during which clients may reclaim locks from the previous server instance, but may not acquire new locks. Currently the lockd and nfsd enforce grace periods of different lengths. This may cause problems when we reboot a server with both v2/v3 and v4 clients. For example, if the lockd grace period is shorter (as is likely the case), then a v3 client might acquire a new lock that conflicts with a lock already held (but not yet reclaimed) by a v4 client. This patch calculates a lease time that lockd and nfsd can both use. Signed-off-by: Marc Eshel <eshel@almaden.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: J. * Freezer: make kernel threads nonfreezable by defaultRafael J. Wysocki2007-07-171-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't care for the freezing of tasks at all. It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is done in this patch. The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable() function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional) change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to describe the freezing of tasks more accurately. [akpm@linux-foundation.org: build fixes] Signed-off-by: Rafael J. | * lockd: add code to handle deferred lock requestsMarc Eshel2007-05-064-7/+40
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rewrite nlmsvc_lock() to use the asynchronous interface. As with testlock, we answer nlm requests in nlmsvc_lock by first looking up the block and then using the results we find in the block if B_QUEUED is set, and calling vfs_lock_file() otherwise. If this a new lock request and we get -EINPROGRESS return on a non-blocking request then we defer the request. Also modify nlmsvc_unlock() to call the filesystem method if appropriate. | * lockd: always preallocate block in nlmsvc_lock()Marc Eshel2007-05-061-23/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Normally we could skip ever having to allocate a block in the case where the client asks for a non-blocking lock, or asks for a blocking lock that succeeds immediately. However we're going to want to always look up a block first in order to check whether we're revisiting a deferred lock call, and to be prepared to handle the case where the filesystem returns -EINPROGRESS--in that case we want to make sure the lock we've given the filesystem is the one embedded in the block that we'll use to track the deferred request. | * lockd: handle test_lock deferralsMarc Eshel2007-05-063-16/+73
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rewrite nlmsvc_testlock() to use the new asynchronous interface: instead of immediately doing a posix_test_lock(), we first look for a matching block. If the subsequent test_lock returns anything other than -EINPROGRESS, we then remove the block we've found and return the results. If it returns -EINPROGRESS, then we defer the lock request. In the case where the block we find in the first step has B_QUEUED set, we bypass the vfs_test_lock entirely, instead using the block to decide how to respond: with nlm_lck_denied if B_TIMED_OUT is set. with nlm_granted if B_GOT_CALLBACK is set. by dropping if neither B_TIMED_OUT nor B_GOT_CALLBACK is set Signed-off-by: Marc Eshel <eshel@almaden.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: J. | * lockd: pass cookie in nlmsvc_testlockMarc Eshel2007-05-063-4/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change NLM internal interface to pass more information for test lock; we need this to make sure the cookie information is pushed down to the place where we do request deferral, which is handled for testlock by the following patch. | * lockd: save lock state on deferralMarc Eshel2007-05-061-0/+25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We need to keep some state for a pending asynchronous lock request, so this patch adds that state to struct nlm_block. This also adds a function which defers the request, by calling rqstp->rq_chandle.defer and storing the resulting deferred request in a nlm_block structure which we insert into lockd's global block list. That new function isn't called yet, so it's dead code until a later patch. Signed-off-by: Marc Eshel <eshel@almaden.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: J. Bruce Fields <bfields@citi.umich.edu>
| * locks: allow {vfs,posix}_lock_file to return conflicting lockMarc Eshel2007-05-062-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The nfsv4 protocol's lock operation, in the case of a conflict, returns information about the conflicting lock. It's unclear how clients can use this, so for now we're not going so far as to add a filesystem method that can return a conflicting lock, but we may as well return something in the local case when it's easy to. * | SUNRPC: RPC buffer size estimates are too largeChuck Lever2007-04-303-16/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The RPC buffer size estimation logic in net/sunrpc/clnt.c always significantly overestimates the requirements for the buffer size. A little instrumentation demonstrated that in fact rpc_malloc was never allocating the buffer from the mempool, but almost always called kmalloc. To compute the size of the RPC buffer more precisely, split p_bufsiz into two fields; one for the argument size, and one for the result size. Then, compute the sum of the exact call and reply header sizes, and split the RPC buffer precisely between the two. That should keep almost all RPC buffers within the 2KiB buffer mempool limit. And, we can finally be rid of RPC_SLACK_SPACE! Signed-off-by: Chuck Lever <chuck.lever@oracle.com> Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <Trond.Myklebust@netapp.com>
* | NLM: Shrink the maximum request size of NLM4 requestsChuck Lever2007-04-302-10/+20
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | NLM version 4 requests estimate the call and reply header sizes rather conservatively, using the very maximum size allowed in the protocol even though Linux always uses only a small fraction of the allowable space. Reduce the size of caller and lock arguments to conserve RPC buffer space while XDR encoding NLM4 arguments. Add compile-time checks to ensure the hostname string won't overflow NLM protocol maximums. * [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman2007-02-141-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future enhancments harder. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau2007-02-141-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). * [PATCH] sysctl: implement CTL_UNNUMBEREDEric W. Biederman2006-11-061-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch takes the CTL_UNNUMBERD concept from NFS and makes it available to all new sysctl users. At the same time the sysctl binary interface maintenance documentation is updated to mention and to describe what is needed to successfully maintain the sysctl binary interface. * [PATCH] knfsd: Allow lockd to drop replies as appropriateNeilBrown2006-10-173-19/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It is possible for the ->fopen callback from lockd into nfsd to find that an answer cannot be given straight away (an upcall is needed) and so the request has to be 'dropped', to be retried later. That error status is not currently propagated back. So: Change nlm_fopen to return nlm error codes (rather than a private protocol) and define a new nlm_drop_reply code. Cause nlm_drop_reply to cause the rpc request to get rpc_drop_reply when this error comes back. Cause svc_process to drop a request which returns a status of rpc_drop_reply. * [PATCH] knfsd: Fix bug in recent lockd patches that can cause reclaim to failNeilBrown2006-10-171-1/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When an nfs server shuts down, lockd needs to release all the locks even though the client still holds them. It should therefore not 'unmonitor' the clients, so that the files in nfs/sm will still be there when the nfs server restarts, so that those clients will be told to reclaim their locks. However the hosts are fully unmonitored, so statd may well remove the files. lockd has a test for 'sm_sticky' and avoid the unmonitor call if it is set, but it is currently not set. So set it when tearing down lockd. Signed-off-by: Neil Brown <neilb@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
